Solfeggio frequencies: claims vs evidence
"528 Hz for transformation," "432 Hz for calm," "396 Hz to release fear", these labels are everywhere in manifestation audio. Where do they come from, and does the research support them?
What they are
The modern "solfeggio" set, commonly listed as 174, 285, 396, 417, 528, 639, 741, 852 and 963 Hz, was popularised in the late 1990s, drawing on a numerological reading of a Latin hymn. Each tone was assigned a theme: grounding, change, "miracles/DNA repair," relationships, intuition, and so on. 432 Hz is a separate thing: an alternative tuning reference for the note A (instead of the standard 440 Hz), promoted as sounding "warmer" or "more natural."
Where the meanings come from
The specific claims, that 528 Hz repairs DNA, that 396 Hz releases guilt, are modern inventions from sound-healing culture and numerology, not from experiments or ancient practice. They are best read as symbolic intentions, similar to associating a colour with a mood.
What research actually shows
A handful of small peer-reviewed studies have reported effects of 528 Hz music on stress markers or subjective anxiety, and some listener-preference work on 432 Hz tuning. These studies are small, varied in method, and largely unreplicated. More broadly, music and slow, calm sound reliably support relaxation and mood, but that benefit is not specific to a magic number, and there is no robust evidence for the healing, detox or "DNA" claims.
