Binaural beats: what they are and what the research shows

Manifestation audio products lean heavily on "sound frequencies" and "brainwave entrainment." Here is what those terms mean and how strong the actual evidence is.

What a binaural beat is

If one ear hears a steady tone at 200 Hz and the other hears 210 Hz, the brain perceives a third, pulsing "beat" at the difference, 10 Hz. That perceived pulse is the binaural beat. It only works with headphones, because each ear needs its own tone. The related idea, brainwave entrainment, is the hypothesis that exposing the brain to a rhythmic stimulus at a target frequency nudges brain activity toward that rhythm, for example, a 6 Hz beat to encourage "theta" activity linked with relaxation.

What the research actually shows

The most cited synthesis is a 2019 meta-analysis by García-Argibay, Santed and Reales in Psychological Research, pooling 22 studies. It reported a medium overall effect (Hedges' g ≈ 0.45) across outcomes, with beneficial effects on anxiety, memory and attention, and a larger effect on anxiety in the theta/delta range. Later systematic reviews on binaural beats for anxiety and for procedural pain have generally found positive but heterogeneous results.

Reasonable takeaways

Binaural beats are low-risk and there is moderate, mixed evidence that they can modestly reduce anxiety and support attention for some people. Listening before a task may work better than during it, and masking with white noise does not appear necessary.

Where the evidence stops

Studies vary a lot in quality, frequencies and outcomes; some find no effect. Direct EEG evidence that beats reliably "entrain" brainwaves is weaker than the popular claims suggest. And there is no evidence at all that binaural beats influence income, "manifest" events, or act on the pineal gland. Benefits, where they occur, look like relaxation and focus, not magic.
